Education Programs For Teens With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Using the SAFE** approach to help teens with ASD To Relate, Communicate, Think, and Learn

Education Programs For Teens With Autism Spectrum Disorder
Teacher & Student
- a quiet moment at the park
8 years prior to establishing the Shoore Centre for Learning (1968-1975), Michael I. Shoore. M.Ed., Director, was the Senior Special Educator, Psychoeducation Unit, at the Douglas Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. Many of the students were diagnosed as Autistic. Unfortunately, the prevalent Medical Model, namely, Diagnosis; Etiology; Treatment; Prognosis, was static and failed to address their learning needs.

Recognizing this deficiency, his team of dedicated teachers and psychologists created a revolutionary Education Model to augment the inadequate medical approach to understanding Autism. The model consisted of 4 inter-related steps:

  1. Needs Assessment: Assess the nature of the problem and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each student.
  2. Program Development: Create learning approaches & strategies to best meet the complex learning needs of our students.
  3. Program Implementation: Deliver the program in a small group, or 1:1, supportive learning environment.
  4. Evaluation: Monitor progress and make adjustments to the program on an on-going basis.

This Model worked. A critical component was to re-unite the children with their families. Now, there was hope!

With 3 decades of experience, understanding and commitment, the Shoore Centre for Learning continues to meet the unique learning, social and emotional needs of teens with ASD. We do this by creating a SAFE** learning environment.

**SAFE is an acronym for:

  • Structure and Routine stemming from our well-planned Program
  • Abstract Thinking & Language Development Activities
  • Fostering engagement and a sense of belonging
  • Education – Literacy, Numeracy, & Content Learning
